CHAPTER NINE
LILY TOUCHED HER LIPS, still tender and swollen from his kisses. She could never ever allow Max, or rather, Lord Longley, to kiss her again.
She watched him walk out the door, his final glance back making her breath stop in her chest as words crowded in her mouth.
In her wildest fantasies, kissing was not like that. It had consumed her. She’d forgotten everything. Camille, her promise to her mother, her own virtue. Michael Ralston was not a real rake. He was a cad.
Max Longley, however, had nearly kissed her to complete ruination because she’d forgotten every promise she’d ever made to God, her family, or herself. That man deserved his reputation.
She’d wanted to tell Max that she’d do anything for him. She’d wanted to tell him that she loved him. She could hardly believe it but he made her feel things no one else ever had. There was the attraction, of course, but also he made her feel safe when she hadn’t in some time. He made her feel…special. But if there was one rule for rakes, she was certain it was never to tell such a man about her feelings.
She nibbled at her lip. If he even was a rake. Were her sisters correct? Did his feelings for her go beyond just another conquest? When they were together, she sensed real tenderness. What if she were wrong? She hadn’t exactly proved herself the best judge of character. And then there was her mother. If there were any hope of repairing that relationship, she was sure she needed to heed her mother’s wishes.
Lily burrowed under the covers, squeezing her eyes shut as every touch replayed over and over in her mind. It didn’t help her put the duke out of her thoughts. On the contrary, she was slowly convincing herself to throw caution to the wind and toss herself into his arms.
“Lily,” her mother called sharply.
Her eyes flew open as she sat up, peeling back the covers. “What is it?”
“Was someone just in here?” Her mother began searching about the room, looking behind the drapes and in the armoire.
Lily tucked the blankets back up about her chest as though they would protect her. “Only Camille, mother. She just left.”
“Nonsense. I heard a man’s voice,” her mother hissed. “What is that I smell? Cigar?” She sniffed at the air. “If it had been any of your sisters I would not have believed it but you—”
“Stop,” Lily demanded before she could think about it. She’d been trying so hard to mend her relationship with her mother yet their interactions grew worse. Lily had had enough. Her fists balled at her sides and her muscles tensed. “I didn’t do anything wrong today or with Camille’s intended.”
Her mother crossed the room in an instant. “You encouraged him,” her mother hissed, clutching her necklace so hard, the stones cracked together. “You encouraged both Lord Ralston and Lord Longley. I don’t know why I didn’t see this before but the best place for you is married.
